LAKE PLACID — Philip H. Albright passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. after a brief illness.
He was born in Winfield, Kan., the son of James H. Albright and Louise (Mowry) Albright.
He began studying double bass at age 10, spent many summers in the Interlochen Music Camp and went on to receive a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music. He had a Master of Music degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music.
Philip played professionally in the Rochester Philharmonic as a student, then played one year in the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., then spent eight years in the St. Louis Symphony. In 1959, he became professor of double bass at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., where he taught for 34 years. He retired from Ball State University and moved to Lake Placid in 1994. He was also the first bassist in the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. From 1948 until 1990, he was the double bass player in the Lake Placid Sinfonietta as well as the librarian of the orchestra. He organized and catalogued the Sinfonietta Music Library and continued to serve as consultant for the music.
He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity, the Rochester Musicians Union and the International Society of Bassists. He was a devoted member of the Legion of Maey. He was an outstanding teacher, and many of his students are playing professionally or teaching.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annette (Nahmensen), and three loving children and their spouses: Andrew and Beth Albright of Jericho, Vt., Timothy and Erin Albright of Scotia, and Margaret and Robert Krauss of Newtonville, Mass; and five wonderful grandchildren: Emily and Gaberiel Albright, Adam and Aimee Albright, and Jonathan Krauss.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Friday, Dec. 3 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Lake Placid and burial followed at St. Agnes Cemetery. The M.B. Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid was in care of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Phil's memory to St. Agnes Church, 169 Hillcrest Ave., Lake Placid, or the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, Philip Albright Chair for Bass, P.O. Box 1303, Lake Placid, NY 12946.
