Mahwah - Carol (Hurley) Benson , 82, formerly of Upper Saddle River and Darien, Conn., died Feb. 11.

She grew up in Lake Placid, N.Y. A graduate of the College of New Rochelle, she was a fourth-grade teacher in the Darien school district before marrying and raising her family. She later worked as a preschool teacher and contributing editor at the Town Journal newspaper.

In recent years she enjoyed winters in Naples, Fla. Her hobbies included golfing, knitting, playing piano, baking and solving crossword puzzles.

Funeral arrangements were by Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, Ramsey.

Carol Hurley Benson of Mahwah, N.J.,, formerly of Upper Saddle River, N.J., and Darien died Feb. 11. She was 82.

The "Queen of the Adirondacks," Mrs. Benson grew up in Lake Placid N.Y. where she developed a love of many outdoor winter sports that she passed along to her children. A graduate of the College of New Rochelle, she was a fourth grade teacher in the Darien school district before raising her family. She later worked as a preschool teacher and as a contributing editor at the Town Journal newspaper in Allendale N.J.

In recent years, she enjoyed warm winters in Naples Fla., golfing with her husband, knitting Christmas stockings for each of her grandchildren, playing the piano, baking apple pies from scratch and solving the Sunday New York Times crossword. She would return north every spring and join her entire family for summer vacations in Lake Placid.

Mrs. Benson is survived by her husband of 60 years of Thomas J. Benson , children Thomas W. Benson and wife Alice of Weston Mass., Linda Meiman and husband Jim of Ramsey N.J., Beth O'Connor and husband Russ of Lisbon and Carol Dannenfelser and husband Dave of Ithaca N.Y.; grandchildren Kristin, Nicole, Ben, Meghan, Shannon, Laura, David, James and Aidan. She was predeceased by her brothers John Donahue Hurley and William C. Hurley.

Arrangements were handled by the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Ave., Ramsey N.J. Internment will be at a later date in Lake Placid N.Y.

Donations in Mrs. Benson 's memory can be made to Ramsey N.J. Ambulance Corps, Valley Hospital of Ridgewood N.J. or to the Alzheimer's Association.
