LAKE PLACID -- Edgar B. Baillargeon Sr., 83, of Cascade Road, Lake Placid, N.Y., passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, N.Y. He was born in Lake Placid, N.Y., Sept. 4, 1925, the son of Silas and Hattie (Hare) Baillargeon.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 on the USS Arkab and the USS Missouri. He married Ethel Fitzgerald Jan. 28, 1948, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Lake Placid. He worked for the Village of Lake Placid Water Department for 35 years, retiring as assistant superintendent in 1982. He was a member of the American Legion Post 326, Lake Placid, N.Y., and a member of the Lake Placid Fish and Game Club. Mr. Baillargeon was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and spend time at camp with his family and friends. He was a legendary Lake Trout fisherman and his knowledge of "Laker fishing" and the hot spots in Lake Placid Lake were unmatched.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel (Fitzgerald) Baillargeon of Lake Placid, N.Y.; three children, Bernie Baillargeon and his wife Debbi of Lake Placid, N.Y., Penni Miner and her companion Bill Gilson of Tupper Lake, N.Y., and Vicki Barney and her husband Wayne of Lake Placid, N.Y. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Sparky Baillargeon and his wife Cassie of Keene, N.Y., Becky Miner of Tupper Lake, N.Y., Melissa Furnia of Lake Placid, N.Y., and JoElynn Garvey and her husband Brandon. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and cousins.
Two brothers, Joseph and Clarence Baillargeon; one sister, Frances Baillargeon; his grandson, Caleb Baillargeon; and a son-in-law, Bobby Miner, all died earlier.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. Rev. Patrick O'Reilly will officiate.
The family suggests those wishing to remember Mr. Baillargeon make donations in his memory to the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 107, Lake Placid, NY 12946.
