John was serving with 10 Bomb Disposal Company, Royal Engineers at the time of his passing. His casualty card says he died due to a accidental bomb explosion at 432 Hawthorne Road, Bootle, Liverpool. All necessary precautions had been taken. Driving of stakes in close proximity to the bomb, may have started the fuze mechanism
