The 1920 Federal Census lists Mr. Angove's occupation as 'Clothing Store Retail Merchant'

LONG, ACTIVE LIFE OF JERRY ANGOVE CLOSED SATURDAY
Jeremiah (Jerry) Angove, 94 year old former mining man and businessman of the community, with an acquaintanceship numbering hundreds, died at the Community Hospital at 2 o'clock yesterday morning.
Angove's passing terminated a week of severe illness in which double pneumonia was gravely complicated.
Since he entered the hospital December 2, little hope was held by family members for recovery although a rugged constitution and strong heart brought several periodic rallies.
Services at Residence
Funeral services have been arranged for 2 p.m. Monday, December 11 and will be held at the family home, 318 (818?) Neal street, where the deceased man had resided for more than 40 years and which was the center of his activities and hub from which he radiated in countless walks to points within a four to six mile radius.
Favored with long years and a healthy body, Jerry Angove knew few genuinely ill days until the last week. Previously he had been indisposed on occasion but rallied to remarkable strength and vigor to renew his daily visits through the business section, to greet many friends and passersby and to maintain his role of a hale and hearty citizen of the "old school."
Native of Helston
Jerry Angove was a native of Helston, county of Cornwall, England. Born September 10, 1850, a year the state became a commonwealth of the Union.
He came directly to Grass Valley in 1871 or at the age of 21 years and became a prominent citizen and strongly identified miner and later merchantman. Angove vividly recalled in later years his overland ride by steam train from the east to California, during which the passengers ofter got off the cars and walked with the train across the prairies. He recalled the constant fear of Indians, the success of the Mormon conquest of the Great Salt Lake valley and the vision of hundreds of buffaloes in herds.
Work at Famous Mines
In Grass Valley he entered the mining industry, working successively at the old New York Hill, one of the earliest and richest of Grass Valley's quartz properties; the old Eureka mine under the William Watt management; the historic Wat shaft, which was sunk at Moores Flat; a side trip to the historic Sheepranch mine in Calaveras county for the Chevanne-Fricot interests and finally a return to the Idaho mine under the Coleman administration. He was regarded as a strong, willing and highly intelligent mining artisan.
Over 50 years ago he entered the retail merchandising business with an iron-shuttered store building on West Main street where the hydraulic lift of the Richfield station now stands. When that property was sold he moved a block down the street to the present site of the Motor Supply company. Advanced years brought his retirement from business before 1940.
Relaxation in Walking
There after he continued active through daily walks and hikes with the Marysville highway his choice. Angove was a man of temperate habits and a fixed routine of life - factors which contributed to his health and longevity. He usually adhered strictly to a life of fixed routine.
He was married to the former Julia Wedlock, December 24, 1883 and the couple celebrated their 60 years of wedded life last Christmas Eve. Mrs. Angove passed away on March 5, 1944 at the age of 100 years.
Angove was a member of Madison Lodge No. 23, F. and A. M. Members will attend the funeral services Monday.
Surviving family members are: two daughters, Mrs. Edwin Matteson and Mrs. Ray Parsons, Grass Valley; three granddaughters, Mary Elizabeth Matteson, Marysville, Marjorie Alice Matteson and Mrs. Brower Dellinger, Grass Valley; a grandson, Lieutenant David E. Matteson, Fort Jackson, South Carolina and one great grandson.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Hooper-Weaver Mortuary, Inc.
The body now lies at the family home, where the services will be held.
