Dr. Robert A. Arner, D.D.S., 79, of Andreas, died Sunday, Oct. 24, in his home with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of Arlene (Shellhamer) Arner, to whom he was married for 54 years.
He owned and operated a family dental practice in Summit Hill for 50 years, including the last 20 years with his son, Dr. Kirk Arner.
Born in Mantzville, he was a son of the late Robert and Mae (Zimmerman) Arner.
He was a member of Zion's Stone Church, West Penn Township, where he served on the Long Range Planning Committee.
He graduated from Tamaqua High School, Albright College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He was a past member of the American Dental Association, the Panther Valley Dental Society and the National Society of Dental Practitioners, and served as a Panther Valley School District dentist.
Dr. Arner formerly served on the Panther Valley School Board and was its treasurer and chairman of the District's Educational Committee. He was also a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Lehigh County Community College.
He was a 50-plus year member of the Lansford Rotary Club, having served as president for several terms. He was recently honored as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International.
He was a former member of St. Paul UCC Congregation, Summit Hill, where he served as a deacon on the church council.
Dr. Arner was a 50-year member of the Panther Valley Lodge No. 677, F. and A.M., which joined with the Carbon County Lodge No. 242, Jim Thorpe. He belonged to the Asa Packer Commandery No. 23 of the Knights Templar, as well as the Lilly Royal Arch Chapter No. 181, Jim Thorpe.
He was a member of the Zeta Omega Epsilon and Psi Omega fraternities, as well as holding membership in the Skull and Bones Society.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a son, Dr. Kirk, and his wife, Pamela, of Lehighton; four daughters, Karen, wife of David Clark of Nazareth, Kim Gallagher, and friend, Gerald Burkett, of Tamaqua, Kay, wife of Kerry Williams of Orange County, Calif., and Karla, wife of Thomas Tessitore of Medford Lakes, N.J.; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica and Kirk Arner, Katherine and Karalynne Clark, Dr. Christine, Laura and Daniel Gallagher and Kassandra and Thomas Tessitore; a brother Carl, and his wife, Minerva, Macungie; and several nieces and nephews.
Service: Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, Zion's Stone Church, W. Penn Twp., with the Rev. Michael A. Frost officiating.
