John P. "Oscar" Ackiewicz, 88, of Shenandoah, passed away Tuesday at his residence.
Born in Shenandoah, Dec. 3, 1927, he was a son of the late Adam and Stella Uscilowicz Ackiewicz.
John was a decorated World War II Army Air Corps Veteran, having received the World War II Victory Medal.
John was a retired carpenter, having been a member of and worked for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Carpenters Local 214 and earlier for the former Kutskiel Lumber Co., Shenandoah.
He was a member Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah, and the former St. George's Church, Shenandoah. He was a life member and was also one of the oldest members of the Polish American Fire Company No. 4, Shenandoah. John actively volunteered his time at the annual bazaars for the Polish American and for the local churches. In addition, he volunteered at First United Methodist Church, Shenandoah, making Easter eggs. He was a member of the Pumping Station, Brandonville, having enjoyed fishing there and also at the No. 5 Dam, Ringtown. However, his family was of most importance to him; he treasured spending time with them, especially his grandchildren.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his wife, the former Joan M. Walukiewicz, on July 31, 2004, and brothers and sisters.
Surviving are three sons, John A. Ackiewicz and his wife, Christine, Leola, Joseph L. Ackiewicz and his wife, Dianne, North Chatham, N.Y., and Mark E. Ackiewicz and his wife, Kelli, New Market, Md.; a daughter, Virginia E. Ackiewicz, Lancaster; six grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Casimir Church, Shenandoah, the sacred worship site of Divine Mercy Parish. The Rev. Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, pastor, will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Our Lady of Dawn Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. The will be no services held from the funeral home.
