Inscribed: IMO. Member CO. D 48 REG P.V. died___(?), Dec. 2(?), 1864 age 18y 10m 6dys. Fairly readable but leach covered on military info. *Name, CO. D 48th Regmt., confirmed through owner papers only. INFO found off Co. D. 48th Pa. Vol./150th Anniversary of the 2nd Battle of Bull Run website by John David Hoptak, CW Historian-Educator-Author. Lists George HARTZ, PVT. Mustered in 4/30/1862, 3 yrs. term of service, died of wounds rec'd at Petersburg, Va.; VET. This MAY BE inscription died, __(?)Petersburg, Va. on stone. NO George Hertz is shown to have served w/48th, Co. D. I believe this is HARTZ. Most a match. GAR marker. The 48th, recruited out of Pottsville, Schuylkill Co. known as the Nagle Guards, had 42 killed or mortally wounded, 56 wounded and 57 listed as captured or MIA during this battle. 155 men recorded lost.
