REGINA (MURTAGH) ABRUNTILLA TROY, N.Y./ BURLINGTON, Vt. - Regina Ann Abruntilla, 62, of Troy, N.Y., formerly of Burlington, Vt., passed away with her family by her side at her sister's home in Troy on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, after battling cancer with grace and humor.

She was born in Queens Village, Long Island, N.Y., on May 9, 1947, the daughter of Robert Ryan and Regina M. (Geraghty) Murtagh.

She graduated from the University of Vermont at Goddard College, Plainfield, Vt., with a B.S. in education. In Burlington, she worked at the King Street Area Youth Program, Adult Basic Education, the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) and, in Albany, N.Y., at the St. Anne Institute. Regina was a lifelong passionate advocate for people with mental illness, the homeless, and children in need. Regina leaves her three sons and their families, Joseph and Ronda Abruntilla of Deltona, Fla., Michael and Jo-Phyl Abruntilla of Colchester, Vt., and Christopher Abruntilla of Burlington, Vt.; four grandchildren, Alisha, Kimberly, Sawyer and Jolie Abruntilla; her mother Regina M. Murtagh of Rye, N.H.; her sister and best friend, Anne Marie and husband James Kahler of Troy, N.Y.; her sisters, Barbara Murtagh of Concord, N.C. and Maureen Murtagh of Rye, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews, grand nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins scattered throughout the country.

She was predeceased by her father Robert R. Murtagh and her sister Mary Murtagh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 1 p.m. in St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Burlington.

Later interment will be with her sister Mary in Resurrection Park, South Burlington, on Friday at 1 p.m. Visiting hours are on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Elmwood-Meunier Funeral Home, 97 Elmwood Ave., Burlington, VT Those wishing may send a memorial contribution to either: St. Anne Insitute, 160 No. Maine Ave., Albany, NY 12180 or Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144
