During WW 2 he was a 9th Air Force glider pilot. During a mission over Holland, his plane was shot down. Although he survived, his life was in danger as the Germans were looking for him. He was able to elude capture and was eventually saved by the Dutch Underground who safely hid him and cared for him.
He was eventually moved to the safety of a Catholic Maternity Hospital where he remained until US troops secured the area and he was able to rejoin his unit. He was then flown home. During this time, he was reported "Missing in Action".
