James Mahon Abrams, 73, of Mathews, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2013 after battling dementia for the last several years.

After serving four years in the U.S. Air Force he spent the next 34 years employed at NWS Yorktown, the last 21 years of which were spent in the Fire Department. After retirement, he spent 10 more years in the Maintenance Department of the Mathews County Public Schools. Mr. Abrams also gave over 20 years of service to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger H. and Ruth T. Abrams.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Delores Fernald Abrams; a son, Michael (Beba), and granddaughter, Ashley; three great-grandchildren, Peyton, Jordon and Lee; a brother, Tom (Janet), and a sister, Barbara Crockett (Morris); also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed more than words can express.

The family received friends Monday, June 24, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. in the Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial followed in H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins.
