MATHEWS - T. Fred Allen, 55, of Cobbs Creek, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 26, 2002. He was Executive Director of The Arbors at Port Warwick. According to Jeffrey L. Mendelsohn, President and CEO of Virginia Health Services, "Fred was the quintessential professional and excellent to work with. We will all miss him very much." He had more than 25 years of senior level executive experience in health care, residential services, and retirement communities, and was a prominent figure in the health care industry throughout Virginia and nationally. A Newport News native, Allen graduated from Homer L. Ferguson High School and served in the United States Marine Corps, with a tour of duty in Vietnam. Allen was a graduate of Thomas Nelson Community College where he received his Associate of Science Degree, and Old Dominion University where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree. Allen was a member of the American College of Health Care Administrators, the Virginia Association of Nonprofit Homes for the Aging, and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. He was a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator. A resident of Cobbs Creek in Mathews County, Allen was a member of the Ware River Yacht Club. He was a past vice-president of the Sail Cove Property Owners Association and a past director of the Gloucester Montessori School. Allen was a passionate, highly skilled golfer and in 1999 was club champion of the Piankatank River Golf Club, as a member. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Allen Jr. He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth Allen; son, Matthew Neejer Allen of Ca.; mother, Bettye M. Allen of Newport News; sister, Judy Allen of Newport News; brother, Richard T. Allen of Ct. A graveside service, with military honors, will be conducted Saturday 10 a.m. in the H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins. The family will receive friends Friday 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. Memorials may be made to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061. Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, is in charge of the arrangements.
