FAYETTEVILLE - Gretchen Gilliland Steele Adams, 87, of Fayetteville died June 6, 1999, at Butterfield Trail Village.

She was born July 9, 1911, in Goshen to Joseph Dalton and Rena Roberts Gilliland.

She served as CEO and was a member of the board of directors at First State Bank for several years.

She was a nationally known china painter and gave china-painting lessons for many years, as well as directed seminars at national china-painting conventions.

She was a member of First Untied Methodist Church in Springdale, where she was a past president of United Methodist Women and was a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi.

She was also a member of Altrusa and the Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Wayne Broyles, in 1937, Joe M. Steele, in 1976, and William A. Adams, in 1998.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Phillip Wayne Steele and Charlotte of Springdale; one sister, Inez Cosby of Whittier, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Nancy Rubeck of Irving, Texas, and Marjorie Brooks of Springdale; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Springdale with the Rev. George Ivey and the Rev. David Orr officiating.

Burial will be in Bluff Cemetery under the direction of Sisco Chapel of Springdale.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
