“The learned John Douglas, late Lord Bishop of Salisbury, and author of the vindication of Milton from the charge of plagiarism against Lauder, was a native of Pittenweem; in 1786, he was nominated one of the Vice Presidents of The Society of Antiquaries of London and was also one of the Trustees of The British Museum; and after a life actively devoted to the cause of literature and religion, retaining his faculties to the last, he died of a gradual decay without a struggle on the 18th of May 1807, aged 86, and was buried in St George's Chapel Windsor.” (Source: Carlisle, Nicholas.
