Duke. Charles Ferdinand Louis Philippe Emmanuel d'Orléans, son of Louis Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans, and his wife Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily, was born at the Palais-Royal in Paris. He was the eighth child of the marriage, and the fourth of six sons. He received the title of Duke of Penthièvre at birth. Charles had been born prematurely and remained physically weak throughout his life. He died at the Château de Neuilly in 1828 and was interred at what would become the Chapelle Royale de Dreux. Two years after his death, his father became the King of the French. The gisant (effigy) for Charles was sculpted by the artist James Pradier.
