He was the son of James Whitely Alexander and his wife, Emma Laing who married 7 Mar 1883 in Marshall County, West Virginia.

On 24 Jul 1918 the 3rd Division had moved north of the Marne River to Le Charmel. Newspapers of the day and Soldiers of the Great War, Volume 3, West Virginia, show Corporal Ralph L Alexander, from Moundsville, as killed in action 24 Jul 1918.

Cpl. Ralph L Alexander, SN# 2339396, Co I, 3rd Battalion, 4th U.S. Infantry Regiment, 5th Brigade, 3rd Division, AEF was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for actions against the enemy. He was killed in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Co I. during his Regiment's attack on enemy held positions while in the Forêt de Fère, southwest of the German occupied French town of Le Charmel, France during The Aisne-Marne Offensive on the morning of Wednesday, July 24th, 1918.

Upon his death, Cpl. Alexander was initially interred near Mont Saint Pere-Le Tieulerie Ferme, northwest of the French town of Jaulgonne, France on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 24th, 1918, and was finally reinterred at Grave #14, Row #35, Section C. at Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Fère-en-Tardenois, France on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 8th, 1926.
