A Thoroughbred stallion, Hawaii first raced in South Africa for owner Charles W. Engelhard, Jr. where he was voted the South African Champion Two-Year Old Champion of 1966 and then in 1967 the Champion Three-Year Old. He was brought to race in the United States in 1969 where he would set a new course record at New York's Belmont Park for a mile and a half race on turf. He would be voted American Champion Turf Horse that year.

When his racing career ended, Hawaii stood at stud at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. The most notable of his progeny was Henbit, a colt who raced in the United Kingdom. As a three-year-old in 1980 he won that country's most prestigious race, the Epsom Derby.
