Preakness Winner, Sire to Secretariat.
By Nasrullah-Miss Disco, by Discovery.Midway through his first season at 2, Bold Ruler was being hailed as a successor to Nashua. Both were sired by Nasrullah, trained by Fitzsimmons, and ridden by Eddie Arcaro, clearly a winning mixture. Bold Ruler began his 3-year-old campaign by breaking a track record in the Flamingo. He then captured the Preakness, set 7 furlong and 1 1/8 mile records in New York, and won four other stakes with 130 pounds or more. Bold Ruler was named Champion 3-Year-Old, Champion Sprinter, and Horse of the Year for 1957.In the Suburban at 4, Bold Ruler conceded 25 pounds to runner-up Clem and won the 1 1/4 mile race. He gave a similar performance in the 1 1/4 mile Monmouth, his final victory before injury forced his retirement.Bold Ruler sired 25% stakes winners and produced 11 champions, including Hall of Famers Gamely and Secretariat. He led America's sire list eight years; only Lexington in the 19th century led more times. In 1966 Bold Ruler was the first sire whose progeny earned more than $2 million in a season. His offspring earned a million or more each year from 1964-70 (inclusive), also a record. Bold Ruler died at Claiborne Farm in 1971.
