Charles Abel, of Oakwood, a former police officer and news company courier who helped finance his sons' camera business, died Friday in his home. He was 78.

Born in Manhattan, he moved to Oakwood in 1960.

Mr. Abel graduated from Rice High School, Manhattan, in 1949 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, Mr. Abel was honorably discharged in 1953 as a sergeant.

He joined the New York City Police Department in 1955, the same year he married the former Esmeralda Petalas. Mr. Abel was first stationed at a Harlem police precinct, and would later end his NYPD career in Police Headquarters, Manhattan, in 1975.

Afterward, Mr. Abel was employed as a courier for ABC News, Manhattan, for 18 years.

He also played an instrumental role in his two sons' motion picture camera retail and repair company, Abel Cine Tech, first located in Rosebank, now in Manhattan, during its inception.

His encouragement and support, in addition to his magnetic personality and its effect on everyone he met, helped launch the business, his son, Richard Abel, said.

He assisted his sons until his retirement in 2004.

Mr. Abel coached his sons in hockey as they were growing up, and he continuously cheered on his grandchildren at their own athletic competitions. He loved teaching pinochle to his grandchildren, which they played each Sunday.

The Oakwood resident also enjoyed gardening with his wife.

"Everyone that met him became a very big fan of him," his son Richard added. "Everyone that met him felt like they were the most special person when they were around him."

He was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Esmeralda; two sons, Richard and Peter; two daughters, Linda Sciacca and Deborah Somma, and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church.
Burial will follow at Moravian Cemetery, also New Dorp.
