Ernest married the former Bonnie Klingbail in Midland on Aug. 24, 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy, where his athletic ability favored him quite an athlete. Ernie was the heavyweight boxing champ during his naval tour and played Class A fast pitch softball when he returned. With a highly mechanical mind, he was a master carver, having won best of show at several carving shows throughout the state.
Ernie retired from The Dow Chemical Co. as a master tradesman, and owned and operated Allen Machine Works. He helped construct the Mackinac Bridge in the early 50s, where he served as an underwater diver, welding the massive girders. As an experienced diver and pilot, Ernie was a deputy for the Midland County Sheriff's Office as part of the search and rescue team. He collected antique tractors and was a lifelong member of Buckley Old Engine Club. He was a founding member of the Pine River Long Rifleman's Club where he shot at the state and national level. Of his many remarkable carvings and statues, his most impressive were the interior wood carvings and the outside stainless steel statue of Jesus that decorate the ground of Messiah Lutheran Church, Ernie's home church for most of his life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kriss Allen on July 21, 2010; and a brother, Edward Allen Jr.
Interment in Homer Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Midland Area Veterans and the U.S. Department of the Navy.
