DAVENPORT - William J. "Bill" Alexander, 81, of Davenport passed away Thursday, September 26, 2013 at A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
Born March 29, 1932 in Cambridge, NY, Bill was the son of the late George W. and Marjorie (Hall) Alexander. His graduation from Worcester Central School in 1949 was followed by four years of service in the U. S. Air Force. Following his military service, he began his funeral director's apprenticeship at Fred Herbst Sons Funeral Home in Brooklyn, and graduated from the Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse. After working briefly for Griswold Funeral Home in Schenectady, Bill purchased the Hall
Funeral Home in Stamford from his uncle, Walter Hall. During his forty-year career there, Bill provided the residents of Stamford and the surrounding area with caring and compassionate funeral care. His devoted
service to his community extended beyond his professional life to the Stamford Village government as well as civic and service organizations.
He served as the Stamford Village Mayor for 14 years during the 1980's and 1990's, and was a member of the Stamford Fire Dept., Stamford Cemetery Board, Chamber of Commerce, and lifetime member of the
American Legion. A long-time Stamford Kiwanis Club member, past-president and twice Kiwanian of the Year award recipient, Bill was a past-Lt. Governor of the Kiwanis Capitol Division. He was founder of the
Stamford Mayor's Cup soccer tournament, and in 1993 was named Rotary Citizen of the Year. Along with his funeral business, he was proprietor of the Stamford Monument Company, and Guidelines Publications, a company supplying helpful literature to those experiencing loss. A leader in service to his profession, Bill was a member of the former Ninth District Funeral Directors Association, and was Past Regional Governor of the New York State Funeral Directors Association. Although illness had prevented him from enjoying his former pursuits, Bill will be fondly remembered as a successful businessman, avid hunter and outdoorsman, bowler, golfer, pitch player, New York Yankees fan, big band music lover, and a pitcher of
horseshoes with a style like none other. Bill was first married to Mary E. Plocki on April 27, 1957. He later married Leona Lundius, who survives, on August 18, 2001. In addition to his wife Leona, he is survived by six children, William J. of Kannapolis, NC, David A. (Lorry) of Sandy Springs, GA, James E. of Stamford, Daniel T. (Amy) of Harrisburg, NC, Michael J. (Colleen) of Hobart, and Elizabeth A. "Betsey" Hazleton (Matt) of Saratoga
Springs; two step sons, Jeff Bell (Fran) of North Kortright and Keith Bell (Claudia) of Harpersfield; two sisters, Mary Hallenbeck (Randall) of Port Charlotte, FL, and Norma Ralph of Worcester; 16 grandchildren,
two great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, October 7, 2013 at the Harpersfield United Methodist Church, 343 Col. Harper Drive, Harpersfield, NY with Rev. Dottie Morris officiating. Burial with military
honors will follow at the Stamford Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations in lieu of flowers to the Stamford Fire Dept. Rescue Squad, 111
