Born and raised in the Fairfield District of South Carolina. Attended the South Carolina College from 1855-1859. Enlisted in February 1862 at Union, SC in Company F, 15th South Carolina Volunteers as a private. Severely wounded at South Mountain, MD on September 14th, 1862, and was "left for dead on the battlefield" according the 15th South Carolina Regimental History (James Clary).
