MANUEL 'MANOLO' ABREU

Manuel "Manolo" Abreu, age 98, passed away Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at his home in Key West. Manolo was born Nov. 28, 1910, in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, the son of Geronimo and Gertrudes (Lugos) Abreu. He moved to Key West from Cuba in 1967 and was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church since he first lived in Key West. Manolo owned and operated Tony's Grocery on Solares Hill for many years and moved the business to the corner of Louisa and Duval streets for several years and finally moved the business to the corner of Eaton and Grinnell streets, where the Paradise Cafe is now.

Manolo will always be remembered by his family and friends as a man with a big, loving smile on his face. He was always caring and concerned about the well-being of anyone who was his friend or family, as recalled by his daughters.

Manolo is survived by his three daughters, Olga (Luis) Maqueira, Maria (Carlos) Hernandez and Ana (John) Kerr, all of Key West; grandchildren, Maggie Quintana, Rosita Bernhard and Emmanuel Kerr; and great-grandchildren, Jorge and Antonio Quintana and Bianca and Jackson Bernhard.

As per his wishes, Manolo's remains were cremated and the family will hold a gathering at a later date.

Dean-Lopez Funeral Home entrusted with all arrangements.
