She was born in Heartland, N.D., to Iver A. and Viola P. (Smith) Canton.
She left North Dakota as a young woman and moved to San Diego, where she worked as a waitress and housewife.
She married William Edward Abney in Yuma, Ariz., on June 7, 1946.
She was an avid reader who loved animals, especially cats.
Mr. Abney died Aug. 9, 2005. There are no survivors.
