Jazz Musician. He freelanced in the New York jazz circles from 1957 until he was hired by Duke Ellington in 1968. Ashby became Ellington's lead sax player. He continued in that capacity until 1975, a year after Duke's passing. Ashby went back to freelancing, and eventually started his own combo. He played clubs, toured Europe, and recorded a few albums.
