Roman Catholic Pope. He served as Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church from December 25, 1046 until his death in October 1047. Born in Saxony of noble parentage, was first a canon in Halberstadt, then chaplain at the court of King Henry, to whom he was indebted for his elevation to the Papacy upon the abdication of Pope Gregory VI. Clement II was an able and holy pope, but his pontificate had been too brief to allow him to do more than make a good start toward reform. He granted a number of privileges especially to the See of Bamberg.
