Murder victim in precedence-setting case. Norman Sellers was an extremely abusive and violent man who beat his wife on a regular basis. During one heated argument, he threatened to kill his wife's child from a previous marriage. The wife, Cheryl Sellers, killed her husband. This was one of the earliest known cases of Battered Woman Syndrome. Sellers served almost 20 years in prison until the California Parole Board freed her. Governor Gray Davis had a very strict policy of denying all murderers parole applications, but in this one he allowed it to take place and she was freed in April, 2002.
