Journalist. Newspaper editor who walked from Ohio to Los Angeles in 1884. Wrote a book about it called "A Tramp Across the Continent". Was an editor of the Los Angeles Times for many years. Early advocate of Native American rights and strong conservationist. Close friends with Teddy Roosevelt. His home, El Alisal, is a museum now administered by the Historical Society of Southern California
