Governor of North Carolina from 1879-1885. The son of a Methodist minister and farmer. During the Civil War he served in the Seventeenth North Carolina Regiment and was wounded at Drewry's Bluff in Virginia, becoming permanently disabled. After the war he studied Law. He died in office.
