North Carolina Governor. Educated at the University of North Carolina, he went into business with his father and established the Thomas M. Holt Manufacturing Company in Alamance County, North Carolina. Entering politics, he was the Alamance County Commissioner, a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1876-77) and a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, (1883-87). In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina and when Governor Daniel G. Fowle died in office, Holt assumed the duties as the 47th Governor of North Carolina, serving (1891-93). During his term, a state department of agriculture was created, three state colleges were formed and the state deficit was cut. After leaving office, he served as a trustee board member for the University of North Carolina and for Davidson College.
