Cajun Musician. Known as "Parain de la Musique Cajun" ("The Godfather of Cajun Music"). In 1947, He had a hit recording with the song "Jole Blonde," which sparked a big interest in Cajun music. He also served in the infantry as a Texas Private during World War 2. There is much controversy concerning his death. Apparently he was put in jail in Austin, Texas, for failure to pay child support. Police reports claim that Choates suffered an epileptic seizure while in his cell and died. Other people say that Choates, who had a reputation for being a heavy drinker, started throwing fits and banging his head against the cell bars because he couldn't get any liquor. He ended up knocking himself out and died. He has 2 headstones: one is a military issued one, the other was donated by a disk jockey friend of his and has his nickname engraved on it.
