Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. First Sergeant Charles Taylor, Company D, 3d U.S. Cavalry, was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallentry in action. His citation reads, In an engagement with a hostile Indian force at Big Dry Fork, Arizona, on July 17, 1882, Troop I was crossing a canyon rim when they were surrounded on all sides by the hostile force. The soldiers began a retreat to the canyon when they were fiercely attacked. After repulsing the enemy force, the cavalry began to move out on the offensive, scaling the canyon walls to reach the rim. First Sergeant Charles Taylor advanced far ahead of his comrades and in a cool and deliberate manner picked out one hostile Indian after another, firing with great effect. Also earning Medals of Honor in this action were First Lieutenant Frank West, Second Lieutenant Thomas Cruise and Second Lieutenant George Morgan.
