Illustrator. He illustated the original "Huckleberry Finn" for Mark Twain. Twain discovered him, through his cartoon work for Life magazine, for which he was one of the first contributors. Later in his career, he was known for his real-life drawings of African-Americans, which he portrayed in a sympathetic manner.
