Erected in 1879, the Union Gaurds Monument was placed in honor of the 135 Union soldiers who died during active service as guards at the Fort Delaware Prison during the Civil War, and were buried in the cemetery. Originally the interments had markers, but they were lost over time, and now, just like the Confederate dead, the Union men lie in unmarked graves.
