United States Army General. At the age of 16, after heading to California for the gold rush, he was attacked by Indians. He responded by joining the United States Cavalry and he served in the Civil War under Generals Ulysses Grant and William Sherman, being wounded twice. Later In his career he served in Idaho, Arizona, Washington and Oregon, fighting in various Indian Campaigns. By the time he retired in 1901 he had been promoted to Brigadier General and had also fought in the Spanish American War in Cuba and in the Philippines during the Boxer uprising.
