Engineer, Architect. Born in Riga, Latvia, he arrived in the United States in 1891 and within five years received a degree in civil engineering from Columbia University. He first gained renown as one of the designers of the Manhattan Bridge, which spans the East River connecting Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City, New York, and for assisting assisting in the design of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, which connects Camden, New Jersey with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His bridge design theories were applied to the now iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, which was completed in 1937 (he served as a consultant in the project). His best known design, that of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge that spanned Puget Sound in Washington State, became the undoing of his reputation when it collapsed in 1940 after high winds hit it just four months after it was opened.
