American Author. Born in Council Grove, Kansas. Raised in Oregon. In 1888, with her husband moved to New Whatcom (now Bellingham), Washington. She soon became nationally celebrated for her poetry, fiction, and nonfiction published in major periodicals such as McClure’s, Harper’s, and Collier’s. Her books were published by the renowned New York publisher the Macmillan Company. Higginson won many national awards for her writing. From 1900-1904, she wrote a weekly column titled “Clover Leaves” for the Seattle Times newspaper. Her best known work, the poem "Four Leaf Clover," was first published by Oregon’s West Shore magazine in 1890 and has been widely reprinted. In 1931, Higginson was named the first Poet Laureate of Washington State. She died in Bellingham, Washington in 1940.
