Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, South Carolina Governor. An 1847 graduate of The Citadel Military Academy, he was a South Carolina lawyer and planter. After South Carolina seceded from the Union, he was appointed a Brigadier General in the state militia, and was present at the April 1861 bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor that opened the Civil War. Commissioned a Colonel in the Confederate Army, he was assigned to command the 1st South Carolina Infantry, which he led at the July 1861 First Battle of Bull Run. Promoted to Brigadier General, PACS, on July 21, 1862, he led a brigade in 1864, commanding it in the June 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor and in the subsequent Siege of Petersburg, Virginia. Returning after the war to his plantation, he contributed much to the modernization of South Carolina's agriculture and educational system. He served as the 80th Governor of South Carolina from 1880 to 1882.
