Australian Shipwreck Memorial. This statue marks a tragic 24 hours in Western Australian maritime history. Two tall ships were lost in a heavy storm off Rottnest in 1899. The community began a fund for the survivors. They also placed this statue here for those who drowned. One of the ships, the Carlisle Castle, was carrying locking bars from Glasgow for the Goldfields Water Supply Project. The ship sank off Penguin Island, all 22 hands during a force 10 storm. The weather was so extremely terrible that the master, Captain Lindsay, could not get a fix on the sun or stars. The other ship called "The City of York" was a smaller 3-master carrying doors and timber from San Franisco. Captain Jones was in charge and the ship made record time for the journey. It was approaching Rottnest on that evening. The master thought the flares were from a pilot boat ahead. Although the wreck was only 200 metres from Rottnest, the 11 crewmen, including Captain Jones, drowned. An inquiry was conducted and gross carelessness by the master were the blame. This was eventually overturned and Captain Jones was cleared. Inscription Reads: Barque 'City of York' Officers and Men Lost 11. Number of Survivors 15.
