Civil War Confederate Army Officer, US Congressman. Served during the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel of the 38th North Carolina Infantry. Became a prominent lawyer after the war, and was elected to represent North Carolina’s 7th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1879 to 1883. As a lawyer, collaborated in the defense of Tom Dula during Reconstruction days (The case inspired the folk song "Hang Down Your Head, Tom Dooley.")
