U.S. Congressman. He studied theology, became a minister and was pastor of the Universalist Church in Methuen, Massachusetts, (1835-38). Moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1838, he was pastor of a church in that city until retiring from the ministry in 1850 and owner-editor of the Star and Sentinel, until selling his newspaper in 1854. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1863. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was commissioned a Colonel in the Union Army and served as aide-de-camp on the staff of General John C. Frémont, during the Civil War. President Lincoln appointed him the first Governor of the Arizona, but on the eve of his departure to assume office, he died at age of 49 from appendicitis.
