French philosopher, he was one of the Encyclopedists. He was born in Palatinate, Germany but grew up in Paris, France. He became a member of a group literary men that included Diderot, Helvétius, Condorcet, and Rousseau. He was a supporter of naturalistic and materialistic views and was a vigorous opponent of Christianity and all positive forms of religion. His best-known work is Système de la nature which he wrote in 1770 and had a great impact on the philosophy that there is nothing but material and motion. He died on January 21, 1789 and was buried in a crypt next to Diderot in the crypt of the Chapel of the Virgin behind the high altar in Saint-Roch. No tablet marks their tombs, and although repeated investigations have been made no light has been thrown on the exact position of their burial place.
