Politician. He was a Russian politician who became the Governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai. He was a successful boxer in his youth, and joined a paratrooper military school in 1969, eventually commanding a special paratrooper regiment during the civil unrest in Afghanistan from 1981 to 1982. In 1996 Lebed was a candidate for President of Russia against President Yeltsin. President Yeltsin appointed him Secretary of the Security Council in order to ensure his victory. After the election, Lebed brokered a peace deal regarding the Chechen War, a popular move with the people, but not Yeltsin. After his dismissal from his Security Council position, he was elected Governor of Krasnoyarsk Krai. He was also the author of several books, which detailed his ideas for Russia's economic recovery. On the day of his death, Lebed, his deputy Governor, and members of the media were riding in a helicopter to attend the opening of a ski resort just south of Krasnoyarsk. The helicopter hit a power line in dense fog and crashed killing seven of the passengers, including Lebed. Aleksandr Lebed was buried in Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, Russia.
