Civil War Union Army Officer. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was raised and educated there, entered the United States Army and served in the Mexican War. He was assigned to Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia and was honored for gallant service during the Mexican War. When the Civil War began he once again offered his service to his country. He served with the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and rose to the rank of Colonel and commander. He led the 23rd Pennsylvania at the epic Battle of Gettysburg. After the war he returned to Philadelphia and served 5 terms as the Republican leader of the 15th Ward in the city council. He was honored for his gallantry during the Civil War and served the goverment the remainder of his life. He became a coke dealer, which was an agent that caused iron ore to melt and was a member of the Fernwood Lodge of free and accepted masons as well as GAR Post 2 in Philadelphia. He died at his home in Philadelphia in 1905.
