Musical Director, Conductor and Composer for Motion Pictures. Winner of 1945 Academy Award (shared with Calvin Jackson) for the Gene Kelly-Frank Sinatra musical "Anchors Aweigh." Nominated for nine other Academy Awards, he orchestrated numerous MGM musicals during that studio's Golden Age in the genre from the late 1930s through the 1960s. Credits include "Babes In Arms" (1939), "Ziegfeld Girl" (1941), "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944), "The Student Prince" (1954) "Hit the Deck" (1955), "Meet Me in Las Vegas" (1956) and "Billy Rose's Jumbo" (1962). He retired after scoring the 1966 Ann-Margret starrer, "Made in Paris." His Oscar surfaced in 2001 after being offered in an estate sale of Butterfield's auction house. It was anonymously procured by actor Kevin Spacey for $156,875; Spacey then returned it to the Motion Picture Academy.
