Motion Picture Director. Born Philip N. Karlstein in Chicago, he was best known for such realistic, gritty 1950s film noir crime dramas as "Kansas City Confidential," "99 River Street," "Five Against the House," "The Phenix City Story," and "The Brothers Rico." His biggest commercial success came late in his career, with 1973's "Walking Tall." His rare forays into television included the two-part "Untouchables" episodes in 1959 that later became the pilot for the hit series about Elliot Ness and company and the 1962 feature film "The Scarface Mob." He also directed two of the popular 1960s Matt Helm films starring Dean Martin, "The Silencers" and "The Wrecking Crew." His final film was "Framed," released in 1975.
