Barbara Zimmerman Epstein
Birth: Aug. 30, 1928
Suffolk County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Jun. 16, 2006
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA

Literary Editor. Founded The New York Review of Books along with her then husband, Jason Epstein, Robert Silvers, Robert Lowell, and Elizabeth Hardwick, with the idea of showing what a good book review could be. The concept for the magazine was conceived over a dinner party during the 1963 New York Newspaper strike. The magazine was well received and became a forum for allowing the most brilliant minds to discuss current politics, books, art, and culture. By the end of the 114-day strike the new bi-weekly publication was a confirmed success. Early in her career as a junior editor at Doubleday, she pushed for American distribution of "The Diary of Anne Frank" and edited the book's original United States version. Epstein remained active at the magazine more than 40 years. She died of lung cancer at age 77. (bio by: Elizabeth Reed)
