Orchestra Conductor. She became the first female conductor at New York's Metropolitan Opera and was "Time" magazine's cover story when she was hailed as the best opera director in the United States. In 1997 she received the National Medal of the Arts from President William J. Clinton. She was considered a child prodigy in both music and mathematics. According to newspaper accounts, she was cremated in a private ceremony in Maine.
