Roman Catholic Saint. Claudius Apollinaris, whom history also recalls as Apollinaris the Apologist, was the Bishop of Heirapolis, Phrygia, present day Anatolia, Turkey. Held in high regard by early saints of the Roman Church, such as Saint Jerome, as well as the historian Theodoret, he was noted for writing a defense of the faith to Emperor Marcus Aurelius that reminded the latter of a miraculous victory that resulted from the prayers of Christian soldiers and of his promise of protection for Christians. Working and writing against all the major heresies of his time, refuting them by logically destroying the heresy's philosophical roots, Apollinaris was a prolific writer, yet most of his works have since went lost over the centuries. While the exact date of his death is not known, the Roman Martyrology mentions him on January 8.
