Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a political economy professor, Alfred-Henri-Marie Baudrillart received his first education at the École Bossuet and the Collège Louis le Grande, followed by the Institut Catholique from where he earned a doctorate in theology in 1895. Having joined the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in 1890, he was ordained priest in July 1893 and was subsequently appointed professor of history at the Institut Catholique, of which he would serve as its longtime rector from 1907 until his death. A renowned academic, Baudrillart founded the "Revue practique d'apologetique" in 1905 and served as director of the "Bulletin critique" for ten years. Appointed vicar general of Paris in 1908, he was elected member of the Academie Française on May 2, 1918 and furthermore appointed knight of the Légion d'honneur two years later. In 1921, following his appointment as auxiliary for the metropolitan see of Paris, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Hemeria in Osrhoëne on October 28 that year. Assistant at Pontifical Throne, November 20, 1925. Named Roman Count in 1925, he was promoted to titular archbishopric of Melitene in 1928, appointed officer of the Légion d'honneur in 1931 commander of the latter in 1935. That same year, in the consistory of December 16, Pope Pius XI created him cardinal priest with the title of San Bernardo alle Terme. A key figure for the Church in the early twentieth century who led important roles in carrying out important missions for Popes Benedict XV, Pius XI and Pius XII, Baudrillart was accused of insulting the Third Reich and was placed under surveillance by the Nazis during the Second World War. By the time of his death in the midst of the latter, he was already blind.
